Are You An Every Day Shampoo-er?

hair wash

I was having a discussion with some blogging buddies today and they were “confessing” to me that they wash their hair everyday. I think women have gotten the message that frequent washing is a big fat no-no. But honestly, particularly with this group who don’t color or blow dry their hair, I think washing every day is okay. Personally, I like limiting it to three times a week to help preserve the color in my hair and keep my dry ends hydrated. But if you work out everyday or feel like hair is greasy or unclean, daily washes are the way to go.

But you might want to consider some shampoo specifically designed for oily hair and scalps. Shu Art of Hair debuted their New Cleansing Oil Shampoo Anti-Oil Shampoo designed to remove oil and buildup and cleanse with high astringent power. It rebalances sebaceous glands to slow future oil production. Pantene Pro-V Aqua Light Weightless Nourishment Shampoo is a great drugstore option that leaves hair clean and weightless. Another options that gets rave reviews:

If you are a daily washer and want to cut down, there are some tricks that got me out of the everyday obligation. First, I purchased a Mason Pearson brush. Using it at night, its bristles help distribute oils throughout hair, keeping roots volumized and ends hydrated. Second, use dry shampoo wisely. Apply to roots and wait five minutes. Don’t touch. This allows the product to absorb oils. Then blast with a hair dryer while you tousle with your fingers. I’ve found this makes the product totally disappear and oil is removed completely.

Thanks for the inspiration, ladies! And hope that helps.

I don’t color or style my hair, but I actually only wash once every 1-2 weeks! It’s not so much to keep my hair “healthy” as much as laziness, haha. It all started by going every other day, then 2 days in between, until I worked up to more and more time and made a conscious decision to only do once a week or less! It saves me a LOT of time, not to mention water and money (instead of going through shampoo and conditioner once a month like I did when I was in high school/swimming/washing my hair daily, I only buy shampoo and conditioner MAYBE twice a year?). It really isn’t the most healthy thing to wash it daily if you don’t need to, though, and many girls who do wash daily and say they have to because it’s greasy if they don’t-washing daily is the reason why!! I tell most of my friends to do every other day for a month or so and their scalp will get used to it.

Wow – every 1-2 weeks! I’m impressed. I agree with you. It isn’t the best case scenario, but a lot of people can’t/don’t want to go through the adjustment period. Sometimes it is having to appear presentable at work and greasy hair just wouldn’t be appropriate. Others get breakouts at the hairline and need to get styling products and sweat out of their hair. And others just don’t feel clean if they don’t wash. But you are correct – you can train your scalp. I just wanted to give those who chose to wash every day some options!
