Pantone’s Color of The Year 2014 – Radiant Orchid on FOX23’s Great Day Green Country

Pantone's Color of The Year 2014 - Radiant Orchid on FOX23's Great Day Green Country on Belle Belle Beauty

I have great appreciation for Pantone and their annual “color of the year”. I couldn’t have been more enthusiastic about 2013’s selection, Emerald. But I need to be honest here. I felt like their 2014 selection, Radiant Orchid, was out of nowhere. I couldn’t wrap my head around the ultra-femine and somewhat dated shade. But I leaned into it, started playing with purples, lilacs and violets. And color me wrong. The regal and mysterious shade is actually quite captivating. “Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. Now, that I can get behind. This morning, I am on FOX 23’s Great Day Green Country discussing my favorite beauty buys that had my falling for Radiant Orchid.

So, what is Radiant Orchid? “An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.” In beauty, we are seeing this shade in hair, nails, eyes and skin. It actually can enliven skin and is available in tones to flatter all skin types from cool to warm. To inspire an embrace of this magical shade, here are five picks for the eyes, lips, and nails:

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Asphxia is Radiant Orchid at its most vibrant. There are elements of pink, making this eyeliner the ultimate in playful. While I have been a major fan of Sabbath and Zero, Asphyxia challenges me to be more bold. I was thrilled how the shade amplified the green in my eyes. And the formula applies great for just a wash of color along the lash line. And this waterproof, creamy pencil applies softly and lasts all day.

CARGO Eye Shadow Single in Pasadena is for those who don’t want to be quite so violet. The formula of these shadows is velvety but not too soft and blend out well. Baffled by pink and red tones on your lids? Don’t be – it is wildly flattering. The thoughtful ingredients also work to protect and hydrate that delicate skin and it is paraben-free.

L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in Royalty Reinvented and Essie Play Date is Radiant Orchid for your digits at drugstore prices. Both of these polish formulas are among my favorite with great shine and staying power. Royalty Reinvented is slightly more classic while Play Date has a vibrancy and electric nature. Both have a creamy, opaque finish.

MAC Cosmetics Frost Lipstick in Odyssey and Dazzleglass in Funtabulous call for a little adventure. I realize that frost purple lipstick doesn’t sound terribly wearable. But my beauty guru bud, Jennifer at the MAC counter and Saks Fifth Avenue here in Tulsa, has my trust. Alone, this lipstick is a hint of violet balanced by a nude, pink undertone. To amp it up, use the Dazzleglass on top for a true, vibrant Radiant Orchid. Dazzleglass is a version of Lipglass that ups the sparkle thanks to light and shine.

NARS Eye Shadow Duo in Kauai is new for spring and has the perfect incandescent orchid with a juxtaposing gold lamé. The color payoff is unbeatable and the purple is surprisingly wearable and plays oh so well with the gold. These duos are always a favorite and this one is a “must have” in my book.
